 John Duns Scotus (1265-1308)

John Duns Scotus (‘Duns the Scot’) was one of the most prominent Christian philosopher-theologians of the Middle Ages in Europe. He was born at Duns, Berwickshire , Scotland around 1265 . He was ordained to the priesthood in Northampton, England in 1291 and was educated in Oxford and began lecturing at the University of Paris in 1302. After further travelling John Duns Scotus was then sent by the Franciscan order to Cologne in 1307. There he died of unknown causes the following year. He is best known for his commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard which also contained his most famous philosophical arguments and beliefs. He also wrote works on Aristotle and Porphyry.
