William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin was a physicist and engineer who became the Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for 53 years. While there Kelvin worked on the analysis of electricity and on the development of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. In Physics the unit of absolute temperature is named ‘kelvin’ in his honour which he found to be -273.15 Celsius or -459.67 degrees Fahrenheit. Kelvin also worked on the dynamical theory of heat and the mathematical analysis of electricity and magnetism, including the electromagnetic theory of light. As well as his scientific career Kelvin also worked on the electric telegraph particularly on the transatlantic telegraph project and the mariner’s compass. Kelvin’s work on the telegraphy and cabling greatly helped in the advance of communication’s in the nineteenth century.
