The Kincardine Wind Turbine Project
The Kincardine wind turbine project from mid 2021 has had a 50 Megawatt (MW) installed capacity. The farm has seen the first floating wind turbine installed some 10 miles off the coast of Aberdeen in the North Sea. The first energy from the wind farm was generated in October 2018.
A Semi-Submersible Platform
The semi-submersible platform is designed to enable a mooring system to be installed at sea. This is while the turbine itself is prepared for use in Aberdeen. This prevents the need for expensive vessels that are normally required for offshore operations in the North Sea. The project has seven floating platforms which produce 50 megawatts (MW’)s of energy.
The Project
The project is being developed by Kincardine Offshore Wind (KOWL). If the Kincardine Project is judged to be successful then it is planned to follow it by several other floating platforms. The main strength of the technology is that it can be deployed anywhere in the North Sea. This is regardless of the seabed depth at any particular location. Though it is true that many floaters have already been installed in the North Sea by the oil and gas industry. The Kincardine Project is the first semi-submersible installation for floating offshore wind. It is firmly believed by many experts to be the future for offshore wind power generation. It is hoped the new wind farm will generate up to 218 gigawatts (Wh) of electricity per year . This is believed capable of powering some 55,000 households in Scotland.
