Scottish Cities – Edinburgh

 

There are seven Scottish cities of which :-

Glasgow is the largest with a population of 596,550. It is a major shopping centre with over 2,000 bars and restaurants and a thriving music scene in the city.

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and is the second largest city with a population of 487,500. The city is home to the world famous Edinburgh Festivals every August. It is a truly historic city with the looming presence of Edinburgh Castle which dominates the city’s skyline. There is also the Scott monument next to Princess Street. There are also numerous museums and art galleries scattered around the city.

Aberdeen, is the oil capital of Europe and is the third largest city with a population of 220,420 which is continuously growing. It is the sunniest city with the north-east of Scotland being the driest region in Scotland.

Dundee is the fourth city with a population of 147,285. It is now the location of the newly built V&A Dundee which has proved extremely popular with visitors to the city.

Inverness, is the capital of the highlands with a population of 48,201 and is the most northerly city in Scotland. It is also one of the fastest growing cities in Europe with almost a third of the population of the Highlands living there.

Perth is the sixth city with a population of 46,970. It is Scotland’s newest city being created in 2012. It was once Scotland’s capital and is one of the key centres of Scottish history. At Scone Palace near to Perth Scottish Kings were crowned on the Stone of Destiny until its later removal.

Stirling, the seventh city has a population of 36,162. Stirling Castle was at he heart of Scottish history for many centuries.  many of the key events in Scottish history were played out around the Stirling including important battles such as Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn. It now plays host to a popular university and is a major tourist centre..
